It is said that the 3rd world war will start due to water dispute, I'll not be surprised. When I live in Bangalore I try not to bathe for a day either Sat/Sun, the weather permits (so do my neighbours ;)). If one person saves one bucket per week then imagine total savings...just like what the detergent ad says...I think Surf.
Having been a long time chennaiite its become a part of my character to screw tight leaky taps wherever I go and I also wake up from deep sleep if I hear a dripping taps :) I still feel its good to be so than not to care about wasting water.

That tank can have 2 compartments. There should be also 2 controls (big and small). Pressing bigger one (people tend to prefer big always. lol) should open only one compartment (ie release less water) and pressing the smaller one shall open both. வெளிச்சம் மேலும் வலுவடைந்ததும் விடை கிடைத்தது.

நீர்க்குழியின் கிழக்கே சுமார் ஆயிரம் அடி தொலைவில் மற்றொரு மான் கூட்டம் ஸில்லௌட்டாய்த் தெரிந்தது. நெடுந்தூரம் பயணித்து, உயிர் ஊற்றாகிய தண்ணீரைத் தேடி வந்திருக்க வேண்டும். சுமார் முப்பது மான்கள் களைத்து முகாமிட்டிருந்தன.

ஆனால் ஸெய்காத் தலைவனோ, மூக்கை விடைத்துக் கொம்புகளை ஆட்டி, நீர்க் குழியின் மீது தன் வானளாவிய அதிகாரத்தை பறைசாற்றிக்கொண்டிருந்தது.

வாரக்கணக்கில் தேடி அலைந்த தண்ணீர் என்ற உயிர் உரம் இதோ வாய்க்கெட்டும் தூரத்தில் என்ற பரபரப்பு, புதிய மான் கூட்டத்தில்! தாம் கண்டறிந்து, பாதுகாத்து, பழகிவிட்ட நீர்க்குழியை, தம் இனமே ஆயினும் மாற்றானின் கூட்டத்திற்கு விட்டுத்தர இடம் தராத செறுக்கு, ஸெய்கா மான் கூட்டத்தில்!

இருமருங்கும் சேர்த்து சுமார் தொண்ணூறு மான்கள் யுத்தப் பரபரப்பில்!

ஒற்றை ஜீவனாக தாய் மான் மட்டும் வேறு சிந்தனையிலிருந்தது. எதிரி யார்? அதன் வலிமையென்ன? அதன் நடை, குணம், செறுக்கென்ன? வெற்றியின் மீதும், இனம் காக்கும் உறுதியிலும் அதன் திடம் என்ன? நீர் வேண்டி நெடுந்தூரம் வழிநடத்தி வந்த எதிரிக்கூட்டத்தின் தலைவனெங்கே? தன் கூட்டத்தினர் வாழ நீருக்காகவும், உணவுக்காகவும் உயிருக்காகவும் போராடிக் கிளைத்து நிற்கும் அதன் கொம்பு நுனிகளில் காய்ந்து கம்பீரிக்கும் ரத்த அடையாளம் எத்தகையது? என்றெல்லாம் மதிப்பிடத் துடித்தது அந்தத் தாய்!

*நல்லது நடக்கிறது என்று நினைக்கிறேன். உலகின் பல்வேறு பகுதிகளில் தண்ணீருக்கு வெவ்வேறு மதிப்பீடுகள் நிலவுகிறது கண்ணே. மனித இனம் என்று ஒன்று இருக்கிறது. தன் மூத்திரத்தின் துர்நாற்றத்திலிருந்து ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் தப்பிக்க அவன் வீண் செய்யும் தண்ணீரின் அளவு என்ன தெரியுமா? நாம் உயிரைக் குடித்தேனும் காப்பாற்ற முனையும் இந்த நீர்க்குழியில் ஒரு நாளில் ஊறும் ஒரு குடம் தண்ணீர்! அந்த ஒரு குடம் நீருக்காக இங்கே ஒரு யுத்தம் நடக்கப் போகிறது*

நீர்க் குழியிலிருந்து சுமார் முன்னூறு அடிகள் அருகிவிட்ட கூட்டத்தின் முன்னணியில் கம்பீரமாய் மூச்சிரைத்தது புதிய கூட்டத்தின் மான் காளைத் தலைவன்! தாய் மான் பரபரத்தது! அதற்குத் தெளிவாய் ஒன்று புரிந்தது! தன் கூட்டத்தில் எந்த ஒரு ஆண் மானுக்கும் இந்த வலிவும், ரௌத்ரமும், உயரமும், அழகும் இல்லை!

குளம்புகள் புழுதி கிளப்ப, இரு மான் கூட்டங்களும் நீர்க்குழியின் அருகே சமர்கலந்தன. ஸெய்கா மான் தலைவனும், அதன் கூட்டத்தின் மற்ற ஆண் மான்களும் குறிப்பின்றி, முகர் திறனை நம்பி புகுந்து தாக்கின.

புதிய மான் தலைவன், குறிப்பாகத் தலைவனைத் தேடியது. ஸெய்காவை இனம் கண்டு வட்டமிட்டுப் பிரித்தது. ஸெய்கா அனுபவக் கிழவன்! நல்ல எடைஞன். புதிய தலைவனின் கொம்புச் சிக்கலில் தன் கிளைகளைப் பின்னிவிட்டால் தன் கழுத்தை வெடுக்கெனத் திருப்பி எதிரியின் கழுத்தெலும்பை உடைத்து விடலாம் என்று வியூகம் வகுத்தது.

புதியவன் அதற்கு இடம் தரவில்லை. போக்குக் காட்டி ஸெய்காவை பக்கவாட்டில் ஓடச்செய்து சட்டென நின்று கொம்புகளை முன்புற அள்ளையில் கொடுத்தது. ஸெய்காவின் முன்னங்கால் தொடைக்குமேல் புதியவனின் கூர் கிளை ஒன்று பஞ்ச்சி, இதயத்தைக் காயப்படுத்தியது. கிழவனுக்கு மூச்சு நின்று திரும்பியது. அந்த ஒரு கணப் பொழுதில் புதியவன் திரும்பி ஸெய்காவின் வயிற்றுக்குக் கீழே தலையை நுழைத்து தூக்கிப் போட்டான்.

தாய் மான் மறைவிடத்தில் தத்தளித்தது! இதோ, என் கூட்டத்தை இதுவரை வழி நடத்தி வந்த என் தலைவன் வீழ்ந்துவிட்டான்! நிகழ்வுகள் நிறைந்த கடந்தகாலம்! எதிர்காலத்தை நிர்ணயிக்கப்போகும் நிகழ்காலம்!

Fresh water is precious and will become more and more precious as the world population grows and the demand for fresh water increases !!

When we talk of conflicts over right of waterbody, reminds me of the opening scene in the movie, "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA". A man riding in the Arabian desert, sees a small well, quickly dismounts and starts collecting fresh water in his goatskin bag. His keen hearing picks up sound of horsehoofs at a distance. He quickly ties the bag and rushes towards his horse. Two men riding their horses appear on the horizon, and one of them shoots this man. The other rider is Lawrence and he asks his fellow rider why he shot the man. "He took water from our tribal well and he should not have. That is why I killed him!!"

The movie "CLAY BIRD" produced by a Bangladeshi Moslem movie producer. Acclaimed at the Cannes Film Festival but banned in Bangladesh because the movie raises some very uncomfortable questions about Islamic practices. The mullahs issued a Fatwa against the movie. (Sounds familiar!!)

The scene is a madrassa. The mullah in charge asks the boys (mostly orphans) to make clay balls and dry them in the sun. WHile the boys are busy making the clay balls, a member of the staff asks the mullah.
"In Saudi, because there is water scarcity, the arabs use clay balls like toilet paper. Here in Bangladesh, we have plenty of water. Why should we follow the arab practice of using clay ball, when we can use the water for cleansing purposes? Is it not stupid to import this practice from Saudi just because we are moslems??" The mullah gets angry and tells the staff member that it is heresy to say anything against Islam and Islamic practices!!

Because of lack of water, in addition to using clay balls, the Arabs are prone to Urological disorders and kidney diseases. Remember all those unsavoury stories about Arabs coming to India for Kidney transplants??


The same scarcity caused the arabs to skip daily bathing. Instead they used aromatic compounds on their bodies to hide the body odor!!

People adapt to the environment they live in, for centuries.

We make a big do about our daily bathing ritual. But when fresh water becomes scarce as it will certainly will sometime in the future, can we indulge in the luxury of daily bathing? What will we do then? How will we adapt to the new situation??

Hi Phantom - you didn't feel it or what? I was in Buffalo, NY for an year (just 30 mins drive from the falls). I would have visited the Niagara falls atleast 10 times in one year. I never get tired of watching such a massive shower. I got Canada visa as well to enjoy and experience it from Canada side.

I am basically from Rasipuram in Namakkal district and whenever I stand in front of the falls I remember my school days, when I used to go in cycle and wait for 2 to 3 hours to get 10 or 20 litres of drinking water.

I think, that is the reason we see more indians in Niagara falls than any other citizens.
